Walk down from Red Beach to Bald Point where Matthew Flinders had an
altercation with the local aborigines. In his diary he called it Point
Skirmish. Collect pumicestone in Bongaree area for this is why Flinders
gave Pumicestone Passage its name. White Patch was the area where he
later beached his ship "Norfolk" to make repairs.
Take
a boat trip 15km up the passage to Mission Point once selected by
Thomas Petrie as an aboriginal mission for homeless natives from
Brisbane, now a favourite picnic spot.
Walk across Bribie Bridge and turn southwards to see the remains of a historically gazetted aboriginal fish trap.
Visit
Ian Fairweather Memorial Park at the corner of First Avenue and Hunter
Street, a place designed for reflection and meditation, and reflect on
the life of this world-renowned artist. Wander around the old World War
11 bunkers in the park at the end of North Street or take a trip up the
beach to observe old WW11 gun emplacements erected to defend the
entrance to Brisbane. Take a walk along the jetty at Bongaree, once the
hub of the island, where passengers arrived and departed for trips on
the Koopa and other vessels, pre bridge days.
