The
Bribie Island Chamber of Commerce has recognised that the most valuable
commercial asset the area has if it's magnificent natural environment.
Having
recognised this the Chamber has become very active in promoting and
protecting the local environment, especially the marine environment.
This concern for the marine environment is evident from the Chambers strong involvement, along
with the Bribie Commercial Fishers Association, in the Lyngbia Algae problem.
The
Chamber has recognised the necessity to educate and stimulate residents
and visitors to be friendly and caring towards the marine environment.
As an aim to this objective, and coinciding with National Environment
Day the Chamber has introduced five local marine characters, a dolphin,
a dugong, a turtle, a seagull and a pelican. The characters were drawn
by local artist Sean Scott.
The
concept of the characters was presented at a meeting with Federal
Environment and Heritage Minister, Senator Hill and Federal Member for
Longman, Mal Brough. Senator Hill congratulated the Chamber on the
concept and commented that it was a great initiative.
A copy
of each of the characters was given to all grade one student at Bribie
State School and these children voted on the names for each character.
The
characters will be used to convey messages to people about looking
after the local marine environment. For example, signs on the Woorim
Beach foreshore will have the Turtle with a message such as "Please
keep of the sand dunes". At boat ramps, a sign depicting the dolphin
with the message "Please don't put plastic bags in the water". Further,
stickers with similar messages will be produced as handouts for
children living on or visiting Bribie Island.
Eco-tourism
within Australia has proven to be the most popular form of tourism for
both local and overseas tourists. Therefore, for promotional purposes,
Bribie will be promoted as the "home" of
these characters. It is envisaged that all visitors to Bribie will go
home with these stickers, which will be put on school bags, etc. This
method of promotion retains the Bribie Island name in households for a
long time. Also the characters will be featured on exclusive Bribie
clothing.
The stickers will boost Bribie Island/s image as an environmentally friendly place to visit.
